Static stability

A system is statically stable when it keeps working with what it already has while something it depends on is down: another region, a control plane, a configuration service. Each region runs its own copy of every dependency it calls at request time and is provisioned in advance, so nothing has to start or be reached during an outage.

Where it shows up in real systems

  • Global load balancer

A single anycast IP attracts users to the nearest point of presence, then traffic rides the provider backbone to the best region. Unlike DNS failover, switching regions does not wait for resolver caches to expire.

In production: AWS Global Accelerator, Google Cloud global external LB, Azure Front Door, Cloudflare Load Balancing
