Strangle the monolith, safely
An insurer's quote engine is a .NET monolith on eight large Windows servers, and its licences eat the budget. The new Go quote service is deployed but has never received production traffic. Finance wants infrastructure under 6,000 dollars a month starting today. The chaos team has planned a drill: at 14:00 the new service crashes for 30 minutes.
Both implementations read and write the same quote database, which stays. The load balancer in front can send traffic to several backends and stops sending to one that fails its health checks. A Windows server costs about 600 dollars a month; a replica of the new service about 65.
What your design must achieve
- Infrastructure cost per month < 6,000 $
- Availability ≥ 99.8 %
- Latency p99 < 300 ms
